Sunday @ actionchurch

actionchurch before service

It’s clear that actionchurch is setting out on an exciting new journey together as a church.  Last week was our very first gathering in our new, full-time venue, and even though we discussed “the Plan” (Podcast here) to get where we are going, it’s easy to see that this journey will involve MANY new routes, new people, new obstacles, and many more new opportunities for us as a church.  Many of the things we’ll need for this journey we’ll pick up along the way.  We trust that God will provide.  We’ll learn as we go.   There are a few things, however, that are ESSENTIAL.  Things that we MUST take with us as we go.  (You know, like that laptop power cord you forgot on the counter at home that almost ruined your big sales presentation!)   During the month of June we will cover four things…four different concepts we’ve discussed before at actionchurch that are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to our success on our new journey.  Four Things we MUST take with us as we go.  We’re calling them the “actionchurch essentials” and we hope you don’t miss a one of them as we prepare for the exciting new future God has for us!

Sunday will also be another opportunity to learn more about this years serving event at RELAY FOR LIFE 2015!   We are going to actively serve some of the most deserving people in our local community…and we don’t want you to miss being part of it.  We’ll also kick off a brand new T-shirt sale to benefit our Relay efforts, and we’ve got some great music on tap from Matt Wheeler and Vintage Heart.  You can also expect all the “normal”  food and fun that makes actionchurch ANYTHING but a normal Sunday morning at church! We’ve even freed up more parking…so go a head and invite ALL your friends and family that have been curious about actionchurch.  We look forward to seeing you at…well…at the actionchurch building (that sounds really weird somehow) :-) – 10:30 am (DIRECTIONS), and as usual, the actionkidz crew has a fantastic hour of learning and fun planned for your kids (infant to 6th grade) as well.

First Sunday @ 36 W. 11th Ave!

out-of-control-main

This Sunday is our first week to gather at our new full-time venue. It’s the start of a new chapter for our church, it will be a celebration of what God has done through his people, and it will be a GREAT opportunity to conclude the OUT OF CONTROL series with an exclamation point!   All month long we’ve been talking about this reality:

“Trying to maintain control is exhausting and futile, and being out of control is even WORSE!”

In this week we’ll discuss the one question that troubles all of us.  “So what CAN I actually control, anyway?”  Is there anything that I CAN actually influence in life…or is it all just random chance?  Should I go to the trouble of planning for the future when there are SO MANY things in the future that are totally out of my control?   Don’t miss this Sunday as we answer these questions with examples from the Book of Acts and our own actionchurch story. This week also features some great new music from the GoAround along with all the normal food and fun that makes actionchurch ANYTHING but a normal Sunday morning at church! We look forward to seeing you at…well…at the actionchurch building (that sounds really weird somehow) :-) – 10:30 am (DIRECTIONS), and as usual, the actionkidz crew has a fantastic hour of learning and fun planned for your kids (infant to 6th grade) as well.

Final Sunday @ Frank Theaters!

out-of-control-main

This week marks the final Sunday we’ll be meeting at Frank Theaters before moving to our first full-time venue in North York.  All month long during the OUT OF CONTROL sermon series, we’ve been dealing with this simple reality:

“Trying to maintain control is exhausting and futile, and being out of control is even WORSE!”

However, ALL OF US still struggle at some level in coping with CHANGE.  I can’t think of a better week to talk about dealing with change than on our final week at a venue that we’ve occupied for over half the life-span of our church…than on the final week (for now) of being a portable church as we move to our first actual 24-7 “church building”….than at the very beginning of a brand new chapter in the story of actionchurch!   In short, this is the perfect week to talk about CHANGE…and I can’t think of a better source to consult than the book of Acts of the Apostles.

Unless you are traveling this weekend out of town I urge you to not miss this Sunday as we will have MANY announcements and updates about our upcoming move.  This week also features some great new music from the Gale, along with all the normal food and fun that makes actionchurch ANYTHING but a normal Sunday morning at church! We look forward to seeing you at Frank Theaters Queensgate- 10:30 am (DIRECTIONS), and as usual, the actionkidz crew has a fantastic hour of learning and fun planned for your kids (infant to 6th grade) as well.

This Weekend @ actionchurch

how-to-build-an-idol

We’ve got another full weekend planned for you this week at actionchurch. On Saturday, (8am-5pm) we’re having our second work day in our future venue- actionchurch for North York. (36 W 11th ave. York PA 17401). Last week, actionchurch volunteers moved mountains of debris and demolished anything that stood in the way of constructing new areas to Love God, Love people, and take action on Sunday mornings…and all through the week.  This Saturday they are going to do it again!  Need details? Contact projects@actionchurch.com.  Here’s a little taste of what was accomplished last week.  Thanks SO much to everyone who made it possible!

On Sunday, we’re continuing the “How to build an Idol” series by doing something we ALL love to do- Give “free advice” to people in charge.  If you’ve ever said the words “If I was in charge I’d___________?” about anyone from your supervisor at work, to the President of the United States, this week is for you!   In addition to learning how not to totally screw up any leadership position you may have (or EVER have in the future), we’ll talk about a strange way of choosing and developing leaders that actionchurch learned from something Jesus said when his chosen leadership team began to argue about “Who was ‘in charge’?”.

So, that’s your weekend plans, and by the way, we also have Silver City Rodeo as our musical guests and all the normal food and fun that makes actionchurch ANYTHING but a normal Sunday morning at church!  We look forward to seeing you at Frank Theaters Queensgate- 10:30 am (DIRECTIONS), and as usual, the actionkidz crew has a fantastic hour of learning and fun planned for your kids (infant to 6th grade) as well.

Bigger than Buddha

rsz_fat_daddies_actionchurch

Years ago, my family and I were looking for a different church. And let me just say – WOW! We found it!! I’ll never forget the first time I walked into Fat Daddy’s nightclub (on a Sunday morning, anyway) and got a glimpse of the actionchurch experience.

There were some donuts on a table, there was a kid’s area (that I swore and declared I would never let my kids near) and in the back of what was then the “sanctuary” sat Jerry Duncan beside a huge Buddha statue. To this day I remember Jerry offering to move over, so I could have the “Buddha seat”…..funny things tend to hang in our memories.

So when I ran across this quote the other day, I was really hoping that Don could find a picture from our early days to go with it:

“Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.-Buddha

I will be the first to admit I don’t know a thing about this guy Buddha. I don’t know a thing about the religion or the culture. But I have to say that the quote gave me a lot to think about.

Two things jumped out at me:

WORK at discovering your world. Your purpose in this world isn’t going to fall into your lap. You have to WORK to discover it. Where is your very specific niche – where were you created to be? What is it that makes you tick? What drives you every day? But it’s about working WHILE we discover.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

…..with ALL YOUR HEART give yourself to it. Not half way. Not sometimes. With ALL your heart give yourself to it. Go out and do something!   Make a difference in the world.

But, gang – it’s bigger than Buddha. It’s about more than discovering THIS world or even working in this world. And believe it or not – it’s bigger than just giving your heart. It’s about giving your all.

“Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and with ALL your strength and with ALL your mind….” Luke 10:27
