Bigger than Buddha

Years ago, my family and I were looking for a different church. And let me just say – WOW! We found it!! I’ll never forget the first time I walked into Fat Daddy’s nightclub (on a Sunday morning, anyway) and got a glimpse of the actionchurch experience.

There were some donuts on a table, there was a kid’s area (that I swore and declared I would never let my kids near) and in the back of what was then the “sanctuary” sat Jerry Duncan beside a huge Buddha statue. To this day I remember Jerry offering to move over, so I could have the “Buddha seat”…..funny things tend to hang in our memories.

So when I ran across this quote the other day, I was really hoping that Don could find a picture from our early days to go with it:

“Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.-Buddha

I will be the first to admit I don’t know a thing about this guy Buddha. I don’t know a thing about the religion or the culture. But I have to say that the quote gave me a lot to think about.

Two things jumped out at me:

WORK at discovering your world. Your purpose in this world isn’t going to fall into your lap. You have to WORK to discover it. Where is your very specific niche – where were you created to be? What is it that makes you tick? What drives you every day? But it’s about working WHILE we discover.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

…..with ALL YOUR HEART give yourself to it. Not half way. Not sometimes. With ALL your heart give yourself to it. Go out and do something!   Make a difference in the world.

But, gang – it’s bigger than Buddha. It’s about more than discovering THIS world or even working in this world. And believe it or not – it’s bigger than just giving your heart. It’s about giving your all.

“Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and with ALL your strength and with ALL your mind….” Luke 10:27
