Nicknames

Sunday I’ll be “unwrapping” the Story of Jesus at our last gathering of 2010.  I don’t think I’m giving up any secrets when I say that Jesus had a nickname or two in scripture.   Just like all of us close to Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. call him ‘lil Wayne, the prophet Isaiah had this to say about Jesus when he predicted his birth:

14 All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).  Isaiah 7:14

Although Immanuel doesn’t have quite the “ring” of  Randy Johnson’s nickname “The big unit”,  it is still quite possibly the best “nickname” ever.

God with us.

Jesus came to be God WITH us.  With us in our struggles.  With us in this great big mess we call life.  With us when we hurt.  With us when we laugh and celebrate. With us even when we celebrate too much and run out of wine too early at a wedding.  (That was his first miracle, remember?)

I am so glad that Jesus came to be “God with us”.    I am thankful for Immanuel.
