"Friends and Followers"

We seem to be more connected than ever.  Our smart phones alert us every time one of our friends “has an awesome run at the park” or “really hates to get up this early for work”.  It seems like that we live in a world of no secrets…where we broadcast everything to our friends and followers.  Twitter and Facebook allow us to broadcast our “lives”  and  thoughts (at least the sort of clever ones) to hundreds or thousands of our “Friends and Followers”.  (BTW, you can follow me on twitter @actionchurch :-) )   Everyone knows what everyone is doing…

Can we be honest for a moment?

I’ll start.

I may tell you WHAT I’m doing…But I probably won’t tell you HOW I’m doing.  Not really.

We seem more connected than ever because we share the minutia of our lives, but most of the time we never share the things that really matter most.  Our “friends and followers” may know our favorite ice cream but they don’t know our deepest fears and struggles.  No matter how “well known” we are, no one actually “knows” us.

I was reading Psalms 139 this morning.  It reminded me that we never really need to be lonely.  We never need to feel that no one knows “how we are doing”.  Here’s some of my favorite lines:

1 O Lord, you have examined my heart
      and know everything about me.
2 You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
3 You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
      You know everything I do.

4 You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
5 You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

7 I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.

So how are you doing-really?  What are you dealing with that’s too painful or shameful to share with your “friends and followers”?  Someone already knows…you should talk to him about it.  Really.

My tweet every single morning thanks hahahaha

  2. Having a relationship with God is just like any other relationship. The key is communication. You can talk all you want – but you also have to be still and be silent sometimes to listen….and remember – unlike your spouse – God really can read your mind!
