Delicious and Nutritious

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve……as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15

When I was in college – and on the college meal plan – AND someone was cooking breakfast for me – I would consume scrambled eggs, toast, jelly, whole milk and HUGE quantities of bacon.

When I was a young adult – and on the ramen noodle meal plan – AND I had to cook for myself – my daily breakfast consisted of a pack of Lance peanut butter crackers (yes – the fake orange colored kind) and a jug of sweet tea.

Now that I am an oldER adult (and somewhat wisER) most mornings I eat oatmeal for breakfast…..something I read about whole grains and fiber and cholesterol and stuff like that, I gues..

Anyway – the other morning I threw caution to the wind and snuck out with the boys to the McDonald’s drive-thru for breakfast. We placed our order at the scratchy speaker, paid with a debit card because I couldn’t find my wallet, greeted the nice lady at the window and drove off – digging and sorting through the paper bag of grease laden goodies.

Only to find that we had been given the wrong bag. I guess we could have turned around and went through the whole process again – on the other hand, the order was actually pretty close – AND we were late for the bus. The boys found enough stuff in the bag to keep them satisfied for the moment – BUT – they weren’t interested in any part of the dreaded Cup O’ Oatmeal. The whole grains and fiber got delegated to me, go figure.

And WOW! Am I ever glad! THAT oatmeal was loaded with crispy apples, cherries, brown sugar and not one – but TWO kinds of raisins! Oh My Word! My taste buds were in heaven! My stomach was singing praises for the morning drive-thru mix up.

SO – what does my dietary diary have to do with SOME ASSEMBLY REQURIED? Get to the point already! Sometimes…..what seems like a mistake in our lives can actually end up putting us on the path that God intended all along. It’s up to us to get rid of the junk and assemble all the good pieces that are in the bag.

“Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior and my hope is in you all day long” Psalm 25:4-5

In my early years I ate stuff that probably wasn’t so good for my health. Then I tried eating stuff that wasn’t so good for my taste buds. But because of a simple “mistake” – once all the grease was out of the bag – I figured out that there was something out there that was not only nutritious, but delicious as well.

What junk do you need to get rid of in your life so that you can begin assembling the good stuff that God has in the bag for you?
