I was reading recently about Jesus’ first miracle, how he transformed the water meant for hand washing into the best wine anyone had ever tasted at a wedding. It’s a great story (you can read it in John 2:1-12) but as I read it, one line sort of jumped off the page to me.
After convincing her son Jesus that he needed to step up and help out with the wine situation at the wedding (sounds like a mom doesn’t it?) Mary says one of the most powerful things I have ever read:
5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5
The servants must have thought it was strange that Jesus thought the solution for not having enough wine, was to ask them to bring the stone pots of water intended for guest hand washing. They must have questioned that strange and slightly unsanitary plan. Mary’s reply- “Do whatever he tells you”.
I can’t think of better advice for me-or you. “Do whatever Jesus tells you”. Whatever it is. Even when it seems strange. Even if you are not sure. Even if you think it’s ridiculous. “Do whatever Jesus tells you to do” Some of the most rewarding moments of my life have come when I was doing “Whatever Jesus said to do”…especially when it made very little “sense” to me at the time. (That’s pretty much every miracle story of actionchurch, come to think of it.) Some of the most powerful reminders of God’s love and power have come from others in my life doing the same…
I am so thankful for people who have followed those wise words of Jesus’ mother over the years in my life.
People who have called to check in without knowing why…just when I need to hear what they had to say.
People who have helped our family in some very tough situations…even though they had no idea of our needs when they showed up.
People who have said tough things to me…things I needed to hear…not because they wanted to, but because they were “doing whatever Jesus said to do”.
What can you do to change your life and the lives the others around you?
Want to be part of an undeniable miracle?
What can you do that will last forever?
Do WHATEVER he tells you to do…
