For the Love…

If you’ve been around actionchurch, actionchurch people, or walked behind an actionchurch t-shirt,  you probably already know our mission statement:

~ Love God, Love People, Take action.~

Loving God motivates us to love other people, and loving people motivates us to do something about it by taking action.  It’s not exactly a new or original idea…we totally ripped it off from the teachings of God’s Son, Jesus.  He said it here:

35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”  (Matthew 22:35-39)

Pretty Simple, right?  Straight forward.  Elegantly concise.

The difficult part is the word “Love”.  What EXACTLY does it mean to “Love”?   Does it involve warm and fuzzy feelings…or serious sacrifice?   (Any of us who have been married for more than a year, had children, or cared for an aging parent, have experienced love involving BOTH).

This week in the final episode of the AFTERWORDS sermon series, we’ll learn what Jesus said it meant to “Love God”.   In the meantime, I’d love for you to ask yourself the same question I’ve been asking myself as I prepare:

How do I know that I truly “Love God”?

What does Loving God motivate me to do?
